BGS statement on industrial action across the NHS
As more healthcare professionals vote on joining the ranks of those already taking industrial action, the BGS is becoming increasingly concerned about the effects of the lack of resolution to the various disputes, both on patient care and on the workforce.
At this time of crisis in the NHS, it is vital that those working to provide care feel supported and valued. We know pay and conditions are a key part of that. NHS staff are highly dedicated individuals who want to provide excellent care, and the BGS is immensely proud of the commitment and professionalism of those who care for older people. For many, the decision to vote on strike action will have been an incredibly difficult one.
Resolution to this industrial action can only come through dialogue, compromise and a negotiated solution. There are real risks to patient safety and to the wider system the longer it continues. Beyond the concerns raised by individual professions lie fundamental systemic issues. What is needed more than ever is a sustainable plan for the recruitment, retention, support and development of the health and care workforce.
