About the British Geriatrics Society
Older people are the main users of health and social care services and their high morbidity rates, different patterns of disease presentation, slower response to treatment and requirements for social support, call for special medical skills. Geriatricians, nurses, GPs, old age psychiatrists, allied healthcare professionals, and researchers provide high quality clinical care for older people as part of a multidisciplinary team during acute illness, chronic illness, rehabilitation and at the end of life, in both hospital and community settings.
BGS membership has been a crucial influence in my career. Our events, newsletter and journal help keep me abreast of new research evidence and innovations in services across the UK. I’ve used these to improve care for my own patients and leadership for my own service. In leadership roles within the BGS, I’ve also enjoyed our ability to raise the profile of good care for older people.
