Region overview
The South East Region represents a wide geographical area including South East London, Kent and East Sussex. The Region has two London Teaching Hospitals, Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London. Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough Common is part of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Also within the London area are University Hospitals, Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Greenwich. There are also several well-known District General Hospitals in the South East Region as shown on the map.
The county of Kent has a diverse range of towns and cities and is broadly divided into West Kent, Mid Kent, East Kent and Medway. West Kent is served by Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, Mid Kent by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, Medway by Medway NHS Foundation Trust and East Kent by East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust - It has a huge population of almost 1.6 million.
East Sussex includes the towns of Eastbourne and Hastings and is served by East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust - It has a population of approximately 550,000.
Meet South East BGS members
- BGS members can join our members directory allowing them to connect with other healthcare professionals in their region.
- The forum is free to access for all health professionals with a BGS web account. You can access it via the BGS app.
Use the forum to discuss older people's healthcare by theme (e.g. dementia) or topic (e.g. workforce). The forum also allows you to ask questions, or help provide answers to other professionals. It is a forum where health professionals can ask seek help, offer support to others or share their successes. Find out more on the forum information page.
Get involved
There are multiple ways to get involved with your BGS region.
- Submit content for your h [dot] blackman [at] bgs [dot] org [dot] uk (subject: E-bulletin) (regional e-bulletin). Every month, the BGS sends a tailored e-bulletin to each of its 14 England Regions promoting local initiatives, research and learning opportunities, prizes and grants and members' work. Help us spread the word about the good work in your region by sharing content recommendations with us.
- Write a blog or a newsletter article to promote the work and initiatives of your region. Contact ourpr [at] bgs [dot] org [dot] uk ( PR Manager for Blogs )and our editor [at] bgs [dot] org [dot] uk (Editor for the Newsletter) to find out more.
- Help organise a meeting. By joining an organising committee, you will have the chance to influence the topics covered at future meetings and help create the best programme to enable colleagues to improve the delivery of high-quality healthcare to older people. aileenmccartney [at] nhs [dot] net (Contact your local secretary) or email registrations [at] bgs [dot] org [dot] uk to express your interest in helping to organise a future region meeting.
- Medical students are invited to volunteer at a regional meeting. Duties at the meeting can involve supervision of the auditorium, welcoming delegates and supporting speakers presentation. Volunteers receive free attendance to the meeting.

Firstly, we would like to say that we hope to see you at future South East Region meetings. Region meetings provide valuable CPD, as well as opportunities to network, learn of local research achievements and to become involved in the work of the BGS. Speakers from multiple disciplines and sectors present on service developments, innovations and specialist topics. Trainees also have the opportunity to present their research, audit projects or clinical practice developments.
We have recently started to have joint meetings with the South West Region. These afford the opportunity to meet with colleagues from our neighbouring region and hear of other’s achievements in service delivery/development. Although meeting in person hasn't been possible recently, we are now hosting events virtually in order to provide the education you need.
