Submitting abstracts at BGS meetings
We invite you to submit an abstract for presentation at the British Geriatrics Society Scientific Meetings in Spring and Autumn each year. Generally, the windows for submission are 1 November to 1 December for the Spring Meeting; and 1 May to 1 June for the Autumn Meeting. Current submission deadlines for upcoming meetings can be found here.
The word count for abstracts is 370 words and abstracts need to be laid out under specific headings. These headings differ, depending on whether your study is categorised as scientific research or clinical quality. More detail is available on the submissions page.
Adjudication process
All abstracts are viewed by a panel of judges to ensure that standards are met and ethics sought where required
Once the abstracts from both groups (Clinical Quality and Scientific Presentation) have been seen by the judging panels they then divide the abstracts depending upon their marks into the following groups:
- President Round Posters
- Platform presentations
- Posters
Poster size
All posters are size A0 and portrait orientation
Abstract Acknowledgement
President Round Posters
The posters are displayed and labelled as the Presidents Round on poster boards. The President and the team will then walk around each poster with a microphone and ask the authors/presenters questions on their poster to explain to the audience. Each set of questions takes about three minutes and the process is one of support and encouragement.

Abstract Supplement Age and Ageing
All abstracts for BGS Spring and Autumn meetings are published in a supplement for Age and Ageing once the meeting is over. Authors are advised as to what issue this will be in by email.
Other BGS meetings
These abstracts are viewed by a judging panel and the authors are advised of their acceptance or rejection as a poster.
If platform presentations are part of the programme for the meeting then these are chosen and each presenter will have ten minutes to present and five minutes for the audience to ask questions.
You will be notified of the outcome by email.
