Submitting abstracts at BGS meetings

We invite you to submit an abstract for presentation at the British Geriatrics Society Meetings. There are numerous opportunities to present work locally at our Region and Nation meetings, and Nationally at our SIG, and Spring and Autumn each year. Current submission deadlines for upcoming meetings can be found here.

The word count for abstracts is 370 words and abstracts need to be laid out under specific headings. These headings differ, depending on whether your study is categorised as scientific research or clinical quality. More detail is available on the submissions page.

Adjudication process

All abstracts are viewed by a panel of judges to ensure that standards are met and ethics sought where required

Once the abstracts from both groups (Clinical Quality and Scientific Presentation) have been seen by the judging panels they then divide the abstracts depending upon their marks into the following groups:

  • President Round Posters
  • Platform presentations
  • Posters    

Poster size

All posters are electronic and recommended to be landscape orientation for best display on screen.

Abstract Acknowledgement

Please keep the number given to you by the abstract acknowledgment email as you will find out the outcome of your submission on the BGS website. You will initially receive an email to advise you that the results are up.

President Round Posters 

These are selected from the best abstracts and are showcased as short oral presentations in a major plenary session chaired by the President of the BGS. The posters from these Abstracts are also displayed and are labelled as the Presidents Round on poster boards. The Presidents Round session seeks to showcase some of the best work submitted to BGS conferences and selection is a mark of prestige and quality.

Platform presentations 

These are also chosen from amongst the best abstracts. The programme allows for a certain number of presentations and we do try to match the subject of the session with the content of the presentation however this is not always possible. Each author/presenter is given ten minutes to present and then five minutes for them to take questions from the audience.

Posters

Posters are displayed and each author will find their poster number in the correspondence from submission and acceptance. Their poster will be displayed on electronic screens at the conference and on the BGS poster page on the website. Selected posters will also be offered short ‘lightning round’ oral presenting slots within the programme.

Prizes

Throughout the conference judges will be looking for the best scientific poster, the best clinical quality poster, the best poster by a Nurse/AHPand the best platform presentation. These all have a cash prize of £200.00 attached. The judges advise BGS office who has won and the winners are then contacted and arrangements made for payment.

Abstract Supplement Age and Ageing 

All abstracts for BGS Spring and Autumn meetings are published in a supplement for Age and Ageing once the meeting is over. Authors are  advised as to what issue this will be in by email.

Other BGS meetings

These abstracts are viewed by a judging panel and the authors are advised of their acceptance or rejection. If platform presentations and lightning rounds are part of the programme for the meeting then these are chosen and each presenter will be asked to present. You will be notified of the outcome by email. These abstracts are not published in Age and Ageing but are
