New BGS Delirium elearning course

01 August 2024

The British Geriatrics Society (BGS) has launched a new elearning course, to help health and social care professionals identify and manage delirium in older people.

The British Geriatrics Society (BGS) has expanded its elearning offering with a new course in Delirium in Older People, attracting 10 CPD hours/credits. This is an in-depth course that will be of benefit to a wide range of health and social care professionals.

Delirium is a very common condition in older people admitted to hospital, with a 2020 meta-analysis of 33 studies of medical inpatients finding an overall delirium prevalence of 23%. It is therefore vital that health professionals working with older people have a good understanding of delirium. The new BGS Delirium elearning course is part of a series of elearning modules relevant to the care of older people, all available on the BGS’s elearning platform, which already has over 9,000 users.

The new delirium elearning course is suitable for any health and social care professional who provides care and services for older people who experience delirium or are at risk of developing it. It is particularly aimed at professionals who deal with complex cases or who lead services (Tier 3 competency). The elearning course is suitable for all health professionals with a high degree of autonomy in providing healthcare for older people. This includes multidisciplinary teams based in acute settings including doctors, nurses, Allied Health Professionals and pharmacists, and also those working in community, primary and social care, including GPs, Care Home staff, homecare professionals and social workers leading services.

The course is delivered via self-paced online distance learning and is broken down into four modules:
  • delirium identification and diagnosis
  • delirium prevention and management
  • delirium in specific situations and medicolegal implications
  • advances in the field of delirium education

The elearning course reviews the types of delirium, common causes and management, with both pharmaceutical methods and simple practical tips. There is a particular focus on quick and easy tools such as the 4AT.

Successful completion of the course leads to 10 CPD credits (from the Royal College of Physicians London). It will equip professionals with the knowledge they need to provide the best possible care for people experiencing delirium, or who are at risk of developing delirium.
