BGS issues updated position statement on Assisted Dying
08 November 2024
Assisted Dying is currently an issue featuring regularly in the media and occupying the public’s attention, with Bills proposing the legalisation going through both the Scottish and Westminster Parliaments.
We recognise that there are strongly held views on both sides of the debate which present many compelling and complex arguments for and against the legalisation of Assisted Dying.
The debate is of particular importance to the BGS given the major significance of a change in the law on Assisted Dying for older people as they near the end of their lives, and for the healthcare professionals who support them.
Earlier this year, the BGS commissioned a working group of its members to review the evidence, gather the views of BGS members through a survey and formulate an updated position on Assisted Dying.
Following this review, the BGS position is that it is opposed to the legalisation of Assisted Dying and is urging the government to be cautious in proceeding with any change in the law.
The BGS has concerns about the lack of effective legal safeguards that would protect older people from unwarranted harm. The BGS believes that palliative and end-of-life care services are seriously under-resourced and recommends investment in these services before a change in the law on Assisted Dying is considered.
