Dr Angela Nelmes

LTFT Representative
Angela

I’m Angela and I’m one of two less than full time training representatives on the BGS trainees council.

I’m a higher specialist trainee in Geriatric medicine, Internal Medicine and Stroke in the South Wales. I have been training LTFT since the birth of my first child in 2014.

Reasons for joining the BGS Trainees Council:

It is a great opportunity to be involved in an active and dynamic committee and to make a difference to trainees, the speciality and older people. I am keen to bring my own experience of working LTFT (at various full-time equivalents - 60/70/80%) and navigating return to work from maternity leaves and out of programme posts to the role and ensure that consideration is given to differing work patterns when scheduling events and the needs of members with young families. I am keen to continue the development of the LTFT resources currently available to ensure applicability across the four nations, and develop advice on approaching departments and trusts about LTFT consultant posts. I would like to see that there is a LTFT voice at events for early career doctors, recognising the importance that trainees place on the acceptability and accessibility of LTFT in specialty choice. Finally I would be keen to be involved in workforce planning recognising that increasingly trainees plan to train and work long term in LTFT posts.

Why trainees should get involved with the committee:

It’s a fantastic way to network with an amazing bunch of enthusiastic and dedicated trainees across the UK, to keep ahead of new developments and to bring new ideas to the BGS to grow and develop Geriatric medicine as a training programme, a specialty, and improve health for older people.
