Self-nominations open for BGS President Elect

30 April 2024

The BGS is currently accepting self-nominations for the role of BGS President Elect. Following an election by the members, the successful candidate will take office from November 2024 for a period of two years. On completion of the term as President Elect, they will succeed the incumbent BGS President and serve in this position for a further two years (2026-28).

The role of President Elect, and subsequently President, is a crucial, honorary role at the highest level of the BGS, providing leadership for the BGS to deliver its mission to improve healthcare for older people. This is a rare opportunity to lead and represent the Society and to help shape the care of older people on a national scale.

The successful candidate will support the Society to achieve more impact, influence and member value. They will provide leadership across the multidisciplinary professions working to support older people’s healthcare in different care settings across the four nations of the UK.

The current President Elect, Professor Jugdeep Dhesi, will succeed Professor Adam Gordon as BGS President at the BGS Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 15 November 2024. The new President Elect will take up their post on the same date, supporting Professor Dhesi for two years, before themselves taking up the role as President in November 2026.

Self-nominations must include a statement of consent, a personal statement of up to 400 words, and statements of support from five current BGS members. The deadline for receipt of these materials is 3 June 2024. Interested candidates are invited to discuss the role with the current President or President Elect before applying.

If more than one self-nomination is received, an election will be held. BGS members will be notified that this is the case, with voting taking place between 28 June and 22 July 2024.
